I have studied and watched the lives of people who are successful with a growing amount of influence over the years. Before success can come to you as a company or business, it has to emanate from the attributes and characteristics of various members involved. Success is one aspect that will not just happen. It is a result of the intentionality at a personal level of each leader and worker. When personal attributes are in check, it is easier to facilitate a corporate culture which in turn benefits the business positively. Having been in business for over ten years, I have come across suppliers, customers and other service providers and stakeholders. In assessing the effectiveness of each business in my own corporate life, I realized how each corporate culture was a result of individuals’ attributes. In this article I will touch on some of those important attributes that make an individual effective.

Honesty – This is linked with integrity. When one is known for honesty, they can be entrusted with anything. There are people whose word you can not question because they always stand by the truth and nothing more. They shun falsehoods and always honour their word. A person whose yes means yes can become dependable and reliable. Honesty separates successful people from mediocre ones.

Humility – Humility does not mean thinking low of oneself. When someone is humble it means they know their place well. Being humble is just continuing to have a good attitude no matter how your financial status grows. There are people who grow big heads too soon. People who when they get a little extra cash that usual tend to avoid speaking to others, become prideful and so on. When riches fail to change your character negatively then you are humble enough. People who are humble are easy to learn from and can also be taught easily.

Hope – This is by far one of the most important attributes one will ever need as a business person or just a family member. In the hardest of situations, it is your hope that keeps you going forward. Hope is being able to continue to dream even when situations around, the realities and the activities around you seem to indicate the total opposite of what you desire. Hope is what separates those who persevere and those who quit. Most people I know who lose hope when in hospital end up dead. Those who keep talking about getting well tend to come out of hospital alive.

Honor – This is directly linked to respect. There is a need to give honor to whom honor is due. When someone leads well, honor them for it. Speak about it publicly. When you meet an elderly person, you automatically prefer them over your own desires whether it is getting a seat on the bus, in a bank queue and so on. As young people, there is need to cultivate an attitude of honoring those who are much older. You can get a whole lot more from the people you respect and honor than when you take people for granted

Hospitality – For one to to be hospitable they have to have an element of being free to talk to others. Hospitality determines whether people want to be around you or flee whenever you arrive. Someone like this normally gathers many people around as he/she is fun to be around. This element is a must especially so for people in the hotel and hospitality industry. If you are involved in customer service then you have to be someone hospitable.

Habits – The things you do daily are your habits. I have heard it said that things you do repeatedly for 21 days or more become the habits of your life. It is important to cultivate or nurture good habits at all times while letting go of any habits that are not good.
