As most of us have been brought up with the usual education (some more, some less) and the trappings of society, it is natural to actually think that WE are our Minds. For anyone with the slightest suspicion that s/he is NOT her mind but is not quite convinced, please lock yourself in a room, ask not to be disturbed and get out a writing pad and pen and write down for 15 minutes whatsoever comes into your head.
There is no discussion yet until you have done it except for those who wish to discuss it amongst themselves of course. You can start now or later. If you have done this exercise with integrity and still think you are sane then all I can say is that perhaps you censored your thoughts too rigidly.
The test is to put to paper every single thought or any number of sentences or words that spring to mind. Essentially, any adjustment to society is just adjusting ourselves to an abnormal situation and can only render us abnormally normal; not really an ideal ambition. If you have done the exercise truthfully you will see that the mind is a problem creating factory with as many set of circumstances and scenarios as you’d like to drive you crazy.
Discussion is always well intentioned and it is wonderful to share insights and experiences however if you have experienced the beauty of the sunset or sunrise will you be talked out of that by anyone trying to be clever, cynical, downright ignorant or lacking in aesthetic sensibility? If the sunrise or sunset doesn’t turn you on then you may remember the birth of your child and the mother’s tears of joy?
These are experiences and are indelibly etched in our hearts forever, certainly not the domain of the mind. Its function is to remember and record. If we are not careful and we are not careful as a rule, the mind can destroy everything. Mind is known as the Healer and the Slayer as it contributes to many illnesses and is also capable of healing them too. I know because I have been through that hell.
The mind can destroy relationships when an apology would have done but the mind as an enemy is a dangerous companion. The mind is a survival tool and as such is a friend indeed beyond our wildest imagination and combined with insight and intuition is a force to behold. Nevertheless it is an instrument only and not our master.
The problem is that most of us think we are the mind and have never even for a moment stopped to watch the process of thoughts that give the illusion that the mind is a fixed entity. Some people also know that it is not a fixed entity but still never give themselves the time to simply watch the movements of thoughts that make us believe our own mind.
Have You Ever Doubted Your Own Mind?
Of course not. You have doubted everything and everyone else but you have never doubted your own mind. You might say “I am having troubles or difficulties at the moment,” but you never say my mind is creating a nightmare for me. The fact is that you are identified with your mind and actually think YOU are IT. You are NOT!
I see so much discussion on many forums, where people are just dumping their opinions, their cleverness and their cluttered minds on others. My objective as many know, is to alert some (a very small number indeed) to the possibility of experiencing the mind as an instrument and not as our master, a mechanism and not an organism. For those wanting scientific proof for what I am saying please find this out for yourself and experience things for yourself, stop relying on some authority to validate your life.
Science deals with the outside world and the whole effort about which I am talking is the effort to create a space within yourself, a space beyond the mind which can be experienced through either watchfulness, meditation, Tantra, Yoga or Awareness.
If you’re having trouble with the negative power of your own mind and many are having this trouble- if you don’t believe me just Google Depression- nothing kills the mind better than an indifferent approach and a non-concerned attititude about what it is, why this is happening, why that is happening.
If you are worrying about why this and why that, you will naturally become too concerned. The more concerned you become and the more attention you give to the mind the more the mind feeds on your energy. As an enemy your mind is a parasite and you are the Host.
How do you feel about that?
It is so ingrained in us to pay the mind attention and everybody does that so it is not such an easy habit to break. Those who even dislike the flavour of this whole theme will be infuriated and so be it. However I know that there are many out there who are really intelligent, genuinely thirsty and wanting to find things out for themselves not because I say so or anyone else says so. They are not the ones to backbite, make sly innuendos, snide comments without any personal experience about what I am saying.
So this piece is for those thirsty ones who are prepared to do a little homework not for those who want to make a discussion out of everything.
If you begin the journey of being indifferent to the mind, it will feel to the mind that it is losing its power and it starts fighting back, so beware and continue to be indifferent to the negative forces of the mind. Pay the mind less attention and it will slowly lose it power and grip over you and it starts dying. Pay it more attention and again you start feeding the beast that is slaying you and causing you nightmares.
We can approach the mind with either friendliness and watch the thoughts like leaves flowing down the river, no appreciation, no condemnation or we can be just indifferent to the mechanism of the mind.
Either way, we will develop a detachment and a sensitive awareness which will give us at last some peace from that which usually ravages and destroys only because we had failed to understand the subtleties of the mind and the ways to go beyond it, yet still function in the world.
