Letting Go and Living With Less
Aug 22nd
Why is it so hard to let go? Why does our heart trick us into thinking that hanging on to “stuff” or accumulating more is good and right. We have succumbed to a society where a life of more is thought to be associated with having power and prestige and a life of less is thought to be associated with weakness and insignificance. In fact just the opposite is true. Stuff can control and consume your time, energy, even your ability to move forward. The accumulation of stuff can even affect other areas of your life such as your health and wellness.
Learning the art of letting go is not easy but it is extremely necessary. Letting go is first a process of the heart. The heart must come to a point of surrender. Surrendering means relinquishing possession or control over the “stuff” that keeps you enslaved. “Stuff” can and will keep you enslaved without you even realizing it but letting go can and will free you. It must take place in the heart before it takes place in the home. Once the heart is prepared then and only then can the physical activity of letting go take place. It would be helpful to begin letting go of “stuff” on a small scale by getting rid of one item or group of items that do not carry much sentimental value to you before jumping into items that do carry sentimental value.
When you come to a point in the process where the item carries sentimental value then ask yourself these questions “Does this item keep me bound?” or “Does this item hold me back from moving forward?” If the answer is “Yes” then chances are that the item is a good candidate for letting go. Some of the benefits of having less “stuff” are that it allows you to breath easier, think clearer, live simpler, and most importantly move toward a life of true significance. Significance is not measured by how much “stuff” you have but by how much you’ve influenced change. Letting go is a step in that direction.
