I was playing in a Texas Hold-em poker tournament recently and won the final table… largely because I was able to put my opponent “On Tilt.”

That’s a poker term for when a player loses his emotional balance. They get angry or lose their confidence and start making poor decisions.

When it was down to me and another player, he had twice as many chips as I did. I wasn’t happy about that, but what could I do, but do my best with what I had? So, I determined to do that.

At one critical point, I bluffed by going all in when I had a poor hand.

When the other player folded, I did something that I rarely do; I turned over my cards to show what I had folded.

Why?

To shake his confidence.

And it worked.

He told me what hand he had folded, and it was clearly the better hand.

From that point on, I slowly began to take more and more of his chips. He’s a very good player and he started against me with great confidence. Then he lost it to some degree and never regained it.

Why?

Because he had made one mistake.

Well, that’s not really the reason.

The real reason was he made a mistake and wouldn’t let it go. He kept thinking about it, regretting it… and beating himself up for it.

So, he lost focus and he lost confidence in his abilities.

That experience reminded me of how important it is to recover from our mistakes as quickly as possible.

Everyone makes mistakes.

Sometimes we make big mistakes.

Maybe you haven’t, but I have, more times than I can remember.

When we blow it in some way, it’s good to remind ourselves that “there’s always another hand” to be played. We can get back in the game and move forward.

But to do that successfully requires a clear head and self-confidence.

Both are needed to enjoy playing the game of life or business. Emotional self-control, emotional intelligence, requires perspective

.We can put our mistakes or losses in perspective, stay calm and perform at the top of our game.

When we do that, our losses don’t hit us as hard and our success won’t lead to overconfidence.

So, the next time you make a mistake, don’t go “on tilt.”

Learn from the mistake, gain perspective and move on.

The type of thing I’m talking about can vary, but an example from my own life was my decision to take up smoking when I was 16. I knew it was probably a bad idea at the time, but sometimes bad ideas can have a fascinating seductivity to them that makes them impossible to resist. I struggled with cigarettes for seven years after that before finally giving them away for good.

Other examples of life-shattering decisions include adultery, recreational drug use, crime, debt, and pointless arguments with friends and family. There comes a moment in everybody’s life when they do something so stupid that they will be dealing with the consequences for years afterwards. Sometimes, the choice can be made in an instant, sometimes over a few months. But always, it turns out to be damaging and wrong.

What should you do after you’ve done such a thing in your own life?

The first thing to do, when you come out of the initial shock, is admit that what you’ve done was stupid and wrong. Many people live in misery and destruction because of their simple inability to admit to themselves that they might have done something wrong. Instead, they try to rationalize it away – “I enjoy taking cocaine”, “I was falling out of love with my spouse anyway”, “who cares about money?”.

Once you’ve admitted to yourself that you’ve made a mistake, the next thing is to assess if it’s possible to return to the circumstances before the decision was made. In the case of drug addiction, it feasible that you can free yourself from it and end up in much the same state as before. In the case of infidelity, you must accept that your marriage will never be the same again, no matter how hard you try.

If you’re able to return to your previous, more pure state of life, then you must immediately start working out a concrete, achievable plan for doing so. Don’t be unrealistic, and realize that it’s going to be difficult to return to first base, but find a determination to do so. Some of the motivation articles on Paul’s Tips can help you do that.

In the case where you are unable to return to your previous state, consider what would be the next best thing. If you’ve committed infidelity and ruined a marriage you love, is it possible you can rebuild it to some kind of still functional state? If you’ve been caught committing a serious crime, is it possible you can rebuild some kind of decent life after the jail term has finished?

Once again, the trick is to make some kind of concrete, achievable plan. Write it down if necessary. Acknowledge that it’s going to be extremely difficult, but combine that with a determination to see it through.

So there are the two steps: firstly admit your error, then take steps to repair it. The life-shatteringly bad decisions we all make from time to time will have a devastating effect. Learn how to recover from them gracefully.

Where can you get help with feeling unable to truly express what you are feeling inside? How can you find the RIGHT course on self confidence that gives you IMMEDIATE plus LONG-TERM learning and recovery?

One good answer is to make excellent usage of online search engine services — meaning, you merely type in the confidence-related keyword phrase that best describes what you are actually thinking and feeling. Surprisingly, the search engines have become SUPER adept at interpreting your query almost as if they possess human listening capacity and understanding.

For instance, it is words like “boosting self esteem and personal poise” that are helping so many to find the exact commentary you are reading right now. Make no mistake, however; locating what you need via online searching must be a precise endeavor — because, for locating your most complementary course on self confidence, the more you know about what your needs are, then the more closely you will find results that genuinely match your search intentions.

Two more categories of ONLINE self assurance assistance you will find within the confidence-course-guide heading will be the many e-books, tutorials, seminars, and audio or CD types of support which feature excellent tips for boosting self confidence in themselves.

Now, as you search for course material that best outlines your steps to increase self assurance, it is helpful to realize that there are some authors, instructors, or mentors who suggest using tactics that involve methods which may seem unethical to you. In finding your best course on self confidence, this constitutes a great concern because in order to gain self reliance, it helps so much more when you can actually BELIEVE and trust in the method recommended.

Have you ever noticed that some people, including those whom the general population tends to look up to and admire — will derive their awesome self reliance from the fact that people place them on a pedestal? The meaning here is that issues of pride, equality, fairness, and moral or ethical values might come into play for you.

When you feel uncomfortable in doing or performing the confidence-boosting tips suggested to you for reasons of spiritual or ethical concern, then it is almost needless to say that such measures within your personal course-on-self-confidence selection are not the proper ones to afford you maximum, reliable, and ongoing success.

More often than not, you will be quite able to tell whether an online self improvement source has your best interest at heart. You can do this simply by carefully reading its introductory passages or company mission statements.

Yet, still another firm or solid way to know that the self help website source comes highly recommended for you is to pay new attention to the Google page rank for that particular site. It just so happens that, for those who know how to do it, checking the page rank of a site gives you greater clarity concerning its worldwide reputation.

Currently, it is not easy to achieve a high page rank; sites that offer a course on self confidence are no exception to this rule. Therefore, add this principle to your research techniques for finding online sites that can offer you the most outstandingly helpful tips for boosting self confidence, whether they are in the form of an online seminar, an e-book download, or audio and CD packages which will arrive to you via postal mail at your option.

In seeking the finest self improvement course, however, a great majority of the American populace is moving toward materials that can be read online or downloaded directly to your computer. This is perhaps the fastest and most convenient way to get quick yet precise information on how to remove the emotional obstacles that block your self expression abilities.

People sometimes think that they should be threatened fairly. People sometimes think that they have done best and the others haven’t. People also sometimes think that the others should do what they do. The others should think the way the think. People in these cases are generally included into a double-standard thinking person. They judge the mistake done by the others; in the same time they do not want to be judged the same mistakes they did with some reasoning reasons. In this case, people should be wiser in thinking and judging. How do we get out of this double-standard thinking person?

The best thing to do, if we want to be wiser in thinking and judging other people, is to have self contemplation. Try to place your own self in the place where the other people are. For instance, when other people make a mistake, place your self in that situation and think what you will do when you are in that same situation. After doing that, you will get the reason why other people do that mistake. After that, you will know how to judge the mistake done by them. And, you will, I am sure, judge wisely to the mistake done since you have been in the same situation. This is what we call self contemplation.

Self contemplation can be done anytime and anywhere as you like. Self contemplation can be done in every situation. By doing this self contemplation you will be a better person on you life since you will think twice when you want to judge the mistakes done by others.

We all know somebody who’s excellent in some parts of their lives, but performs poorly at others. You might be such a person yourself.

They are also the lowest-hanging fruit on the self-improvement tree. To develop basic skills in some area usually has a much bigger payoff than to improve in an area where we are already skilled. It’s often the first few lessons in any endeavor where we learn and improve the most.

The advice is simple – step out of what you’re most comfortable with and concentrate on improving those things that directly affect you and that you’re really bad at.

Perhaps you have poor social skills, or maybe your financial literacy isn’t that good. Maybe your fitness level needs some work, or your self-discipline is poor. Have you always been terrible at managing money, or is your numeracy not as good as it could be? Perhaps your personal appearance and hygiene could do with some work, or your education level is much below what you’d like it to be.

Whatever your greatest weakness is, you probably already know all about it. But instead of fixing what’s clearly broken, you may instead prefer to tinker with what you’ve got that works.

Don’t make the mistake of only working on what you’re good at.

Decide today what the greatest weakness you have that needs improving is. And make a plan to improve yourself in that area. You may want to write your plan down, or merely work it out in your head. It doesn’t matter so long as you take active steps to address it.

Your ultimate goal should be to turn your weakness into a strength. Surprise those who know you by filling in the gaps in your character and excelling in something that they always thought you were terrible at.

And surprise yourself by improving the area of your character you have always secretly been ashamed of.

If you want to work your way towards gaining a healthy amount of self-esteem, start building self-awareness. Self-awareness means having the courage to come to terms with every single aspect of your self – physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual – including both your strengths and weaknesses in each area.

If you’re unhappy with yourself for any reason, deal with what’s troubling you immediately before it can cause permanent damage to your self-esteem. The only things that we can change about ourselves are those that we are willing to acknowledge. When we deny that someone, or something, is robbing us of our self-esteem, we become passive and refuse to take action.

The first thing to do is to ask yourself, “What triggered my low self-esteem?” Was it an unkind remark, a poor body image, rejection, a major setback in your life, etc.? Try to be as honest as possible and pinpoint the exact cause.

The next step would be to find solutions to eradicate the cause. I don’t suggest that you start plotting revenge to every person who’s been mean to you. And certainly, you can’t turn back the hands of time and wish that you’ve done something different. The feasible way has more to do with your thinking. Change the way you think about the people or things or situations that gave you low self-esteem.

It’s a normal reaction to retreat further into your shell if you’ve been hurt or rejected in the past. But how long are you going to allow people or circumstances to keep you from achieving your fullest potential and live a satisfying life?

Redeem the hours you’ve spent feeling sorry for yourself. Get a new perspective about life. Immerse yourself in books, music, and movies that inspire you. Cut out anything in your life that makes you feel bad about yourself.

Another way to build self-awareness is to watch the way you talk to yourself. Do you tend to put yourself down whenever you make a mistake? If so, stop. Treat yourself kindly and say, “Next time, I resolve to do better.”

Learn to validate yourself. Sure, you may have weaknesses, but you have capabilities, too. One of the best ways to build your self-esteem is to identify those areas where you’re good at and capitalize on them.

Also, be aware that from this point you and you alone are responsible for your self-esteem. So like yourself. Like yourself enough that even when you’re not in the company of others, you can be at peace.

Now that you know yourself better, get a clearer idea of what you want most out of life. With a higher level of self-esteem, you can afford to risk more, achieve more, and reach out more to people.

Confidence is an approach to trust in your abilities. Why it is essential and how to build it – following are the five tips to find out.

1. In your mind, react in a hostile and constructive way towards fears.
It is an observation that in every moment of time, fear moves stealthily into your thoughts. Perceive yourself reacting insistently and positively towards those fears. This practice will be a subject of time, before these reactions expand to reality when these situations embarrass in your actual, day-to-day life.

2. Don’t dread to take risks.
Move about the forefront. You have to take risks and set down to do what actually you want to do. Perform What You Fear!

3. Try to do which is impossible.
Do every work with this intention that it can be done, and you can do it, by invoking your inner capability you can do it. Do not at your place with the same pace, if a mistake happens in the length of the way just accurate your actions as you go along.

4. Feel relaxed every time.
When the muscles of the body are kept perfectly relaxed it is impossible to feel fear. It is proved by physiology studies. So identify those contraction muscles and focus on relaxing them the moment you recognize the fear or nervousness creeping in throughout a situation. It is also a common anger management tips that relax your muscles.

5. Always be happy, don’t be feared.
Put back all the feelings of fright and enjoy the feelings that you captured from most pleasure moments ever in your life. What is the thing that strikes the harmony and misses with you a pleasant experience? Think about it! Without any trouble if you exchange your fear with another excellent feeling, then you will be able to convincingly constrain the fear away by pure will power. Immediately modify your internal exchange of ideas to turn around the thought and put a positive twist to it, whenever you identify a negative thought creeping into your mind.

Time is one thing that we cannot save for later. We simply cannot go back and use leftover time. Once it passes it is gone so it is best to use it wisely while it is here.

If you find that you are having trouble trying to fit everything you need to do in a day, week or even a month then a schedule may be just what you need.

To best maximize the time you have you need to first figure out everything you need to get done.

Start by creating a monthly schedule that covers Sunday through Saturday and has the days broken down by hours.

Then you will want to block out times for sleeping, bathing and dressing, hair styling and make up and fill in daily meal times. These are set times that you will not be available to do anything else so by filling these in first you help ensure that you do not make a mistake with scheduling your time.

Next you will want to write everything down that you need to get done in a month. Include Dr. appointments, work, exercise, meal preparing, studying or reading and any other activities you participate in.

If you work from home you may want to even break down a list of all the activities you need to do to work from home and place this on the schedule as well. This list will vary from person to person.

Having a schedule can keep you from scrambling to get things done and getting overwhelmed.

Now you need to give each item a number from one to ten, prioritizing each activity. Those labeled from numbers one through five are the items you want to put on your schedule first, things that must be done on a daily or weekly basis.

Finally place the items from six to ten on your schedule. Some of these activities may be things you only do every two weeks or even once a month so schedule accordingly.

Be sure to schedule time for relaxing and spending time with your spouse, children or family.

Do not feel bad if you accidentally go off schedule from time to time. Life happens and sometimes the day does not go exactly as planned and you may even have to go back and revise your schedule, but if you are having trouble getting things done a schedule can be a great tool to help you stay on track.

If you want to get back into shape and lose some extra weight, joining a gym is a great option. It will give you access to a wide variety of weight lifting equipment and machines so that you will be able to challenge your body burning off fat and building some muscle. When you look to join a gym, there are some things that you need to be aware of so that you can get a better experience.

When you go to a gym, you need to preview it first. Many will offer you a walk around or might even take you on a tour. This is where you can see what equipment is there and how everything works. You will have a basic idea if you will be able to get a good workout there or not.

It’s good to ask for a one week pass. Many gyms will give you this for free. If it’s not free, ask if you can purchase one. This way you can workout for a week and see if you enjoy the experience. During this time you should know if the gym is for you or not.

Be careful about the long term contracts. Many gyms will pressure you with a sale pitch to sign a 24 month contract that you can’t get out of. This is a huge mistake to make. You don’t know realistically if you will even be in the area in 24 months. You should look for a gym with a monthly contract with no obligations.

Make sure the gym is easy to cancel if you would like to go elsewhere. Something like a basic phone call or informing the gym while you are there should be good enough. Some gyms want official letters mailed to the gym complicating the process so it’s harder on you. Avoid those gyms.

Be sure you read the gym rules. There might be things that you just don’t like that much. You might consider another gym that fits your needs better. Some gyms such as the one my wife joined requires you to have the amount deducted from your checking account. Doing it this way she was able to get a lot cheaper rate than if she paid monthly. Check all options when looking.

When you join a gym, there are many things you should be aware of to make sure you have the right fit. Find out what these are to get a better experience.

An elliptical is something that many have turned to for exercise. The advantage of the elliptical is that it’s much easier on your joints. Since your legs glide with the machine, you won’t have as much impact on your ankles, hips, and knees as you would if you were to run. While these machines are better for you joints, you still need to be safe while using them. Find out how to be more safe while using your elliptical.

Have plenty of room for the machine. You don’t want to hit the walls as you are using it. Make sure that the machine isn’t sliding either. Sometimes as you use it, the elliptical will gradually slide having a higher chance of hitting something in the room over time.

Make sure your children know to not be around it while you are using it. Try to train your pet to stay away. Your child or pet could be hurt if hit with one of the peddles as these are moving quickly and with force.

Be sure that you tighten the bolts on your elliptical every few weeks. Many make the mistake of not doing this and will have it fall apart while in use meaning that there is a chance of becoming hurt. Do not do this to yourself.

Keep your hands on the bars at all times. It’s much easier to balance. Normally there are the moving bars and the stable ones. Either way, hang on to something.

Stretch before you workout. The elliptical since it’s forcing your legs to go in a certain motion can strain a muscle that is not stretched properly.

Have your doctor approve you for that type of workout before beginning. Most doctors will like the idea of using this machine as it’s safer, but you still should get checked out first.
