What Is Meditation About and What It Can Do for You
Sep 15th
Meditation has been practiced for thousands of years in many parts of the world. It’s not just about changing the subjective experience of men, no, the psychological effects are so immense that even physical impacts are detectable and measurable. Especially Buddhism is usually associated with meditation because in Buddhist monasteries this art of finding ones true center and self has been practiced for a long time.
What is meditation?
Meditation aims at the change of consciousness to create and develop a holistic form of healing and positive impact both in a psychological and a physiological way.
What kind of different meditation practices exist?
Meditation can be practiced in many different forms. For example both Yoga and Zen aim to put people in different states, in which things are seen clearly and the energy can flow freely again.
How does meditation affect you well-being?
When practicing meditation people learn to listen inside themselves and to recognize weaknesses. Even the most simple forms of meditation strengthen the self healing powers of the human body. Especially if you feel stressed meditation can help you getting balanced again.
Meditation has positive impacts on:
chronic diseases stress high blood pressure sleep disorder
Active or passive meditation?
In meditation there are usually distinguished two different categories: the passive meditation and the active meditation. In addition, there are also differences whether external stimuli are used or not (sound effects, light effects). In the passive form of meditation the body remains calm while trying to center and shifting to a different level of consciousness.
While practicing active meditation the body itself is in motion. For example Yoga Asanas or Tantra. However, even dancing can be combined with meditation. There are many tribal cultures using rhythmic movements to reach a kind of trance state and a different level of consciousness.
Meditation opens a wide range to change your thinking and to focus on your inner world. Everybody is open to different forms of meditation and prefers the active or passive way but also your daily constitution determines which form you might prefer.
How to start?
My best advice is to just do it. Get some simple books about meditation, Yoga or Zen and start. You will feel if it is the right form for you. However, at some point you have to make your choice and focus on YOUR path.
Get In Touch With Your Spiritual Self – An Introduction to Meditation

There are many benefits of meditation that can be learned if we would just take the time to do so. Meditation is a way of getting in touch with our spiritual selves. As humans, we are very spiritual beings. Our spirituality is one of things that separates us from the animals of this world. But what is the benefit of getting in touch with this side of our being? The benefits of meditation are infinite. Meditation energizes us, it allows us to reboot our brains, so to speak, it allows us to get to know ourselves in ways we’ve never known before, and it allows us to ascend into a higher level of consciousness, which is very needed in these troubling times. |
To realize the benefits of meditation, you need to meditate. If you’re not sure how, simply close your eyes and drown out the physical world.
As you close your eyes, you may find your mind racing. It’s important to clear your mind. If you can’t seem to do that, play some soft music and concentrate on it. Or, repeat a word or phrase over and over. This is called a mantra.
When you repeat a mantra, you are effectively clearing your mind as you induce a meditative state. However, there is one more important thing you must do to induce meditation and that’s to relax completely.
How To Relax
In order to realize the benefits of meditation, you must relax. You can do this by focusing on each body part and willing it to relax. This sounds easy but many of us are very tense, and yet, we don’t even realize it. Begin with your toes and actually tell them to relax.
Move up to your ankles, to your shins and calves, to your knees and continue all the way up to your head. When you are completely relaxed, begin to count down from ten. Imagine yourself walking down a long staircase into the darkness that is your subconscious.
This is the method hypnotists use to induce a hypnotic state but it also works great for meditation.
When you are meditating, the benefits of meditation may not seem completely clear. However, it’s in your waking life that the benefits may actually be seen.
The benefits of meditation include being able to handle stress better, it allows you to enjoy life more by putting aside petty differences in order to create more harmony in your life.
There may be more benefits to meditation, however. Many believe that other people can be affected by meditation, even though they may not be aware of it.
Some believe that by meditating, you can affect the consciousness of other people around you.
For instance, the recent school shootings reveal a consciousness that is rife with violence and chaos and, essentially, the loss of harmony. By meditating as a group, many believe they can erase such violence and many studies have shown this to be true.
Yet this is only one of the many benefits of meditation. So close your eyes, clear your mind and enjoy all of the freedom meditation has to offer.
Keep an eye on this lifestyle category, I will be writing many more articles on meditation…
