How A Positive Attitude Can Help You Build Self Esteem
Oct 8th
One of the best skills an individual can have is the ability to have a cool, relaxed attitude in the heat of the moment. People who are successful in their career, business and personal relationships are resilient to stressful events. People who enjoy good mental health are mentally resilient because their mind is able to handle the stress we all naturally experience.
There is a lot more to being resilient than just being the strong silent type. There seems to be a common perception of people who are resilient, are emotionally detached. It’s not that people who are resilient are unemotional. What they are able to do is mastering their mind so their impulses can be conquered. People who are resilient tend to remain calm and don’t react violently with anger, tears or fear. They are very good at controlling their emotions. You will be better equipped to cope if you learn how to keep yourself physically calm.
There are many techniques on how to control your heart rate and breathing but the first step to developing your mind to being more resilient is by learning how to control your physical reaction to a particular event. More advanced methods such as Tai Chi or Yoga are great exercises for stimulating the mind and body. These forms are fantastic for developing mastery over physical condition. This isn’t for everyone though and fortunately not essential as there are many other resources available that can teach you about breathing techniques from the internet or your local library.
Hardship can be a personal issue for many people. Impulsive behavior anxiety and stress usually stems from being unable to deal with the difficulties of life. Resilient people face their problem head on working out what needs to be done now, get over what’s happened to them and don’t dwell on issues or see themselves as a victim.
It’s quite important to talk to people and look to take practical steps like joining support groups and move on to problem solving as quickly as possible. Showing sympathy can feel good and this can be tempting to be a victim by telling people your troubles, but it’s more constructive in the long run by problem solving.
Many people survive troubled childhoods or families and have gone on to having very successful lives. A lifetime of problems shouldn’t be condemned from all these bad events in the past. The majority of people who’s parents were alcoholics do not copy their drinking habits and the same is true of adults who have survived families with poverty, racial discrimination, mental illness and marital problems. Many people rebound from this troubled past with their self esteem intact. Talking to a therapist can help you if you need it now you are an adult.
Rather than getting miserable and upset about the injustice of an event, if you have gone through personal problems, be pleased that you can stand tall and proud. Something bad happened and you are still here surviving. Try and look deep into how you responded that you can be proud of, build your self esteem and find your strengths from that achievement.
Distinguishing between suffering from clinical depression and feeling low is important. We all experience feelings of being down or low on occasions. It’s a frequent response to difficult situations or sad events. Depression is when these feelings are so strong and persistent that you are prevented from doing what you normally do.
Depression is not just a feeling of feeling low or down. It’s an illness that needs to be treated. If you are experiencing feelings of depression then you are only down temporarily rather than it affecting people for weeks, months and years. They can be so intense that normal life is severely affected. You can’t work normally, enjoy being with your friends and family plus all the other things you do.
If you are depressed, you may feel hopeless, worthless and always tired. In many cases, if your depression is quite mild, normal life can just about continue but everyday tasks will be more difficult. If you suffer from severe depression, your feelings could be so unbearable that you could start thinking about suicide.
If you’ve had depression or anxiety before it is very important to seek help even if you weren’t formally diagnosed. You’re more likely to have an episode of depression if you’ve had one before. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health and although can be perceived as being a bit daft, try changing your whole outlook on life by having a positive state of mind and doing this everyday will slowly but surely begin to help your situation. Good luck.
