Making My Own Decisions
Nov 2nd
Do you have difficulty making your own decisions? Do you allow others to tell you what to do because you feel relieved that you finally don’t have to make those decisions yourself? Do you feel uneasy when you have to make decisions of your own because you don’t really know what you genuinely want?
If you do, believe me, you’re not alone. Many adolescents feel very unsure of themselves when they have to make quick decisions. Even adults are in the same position. However, what it is important to note that you can improve your decision making to the point where you feel very confident making decisions. Here are a few tips that you could try.
1. Don’t let your parents, or anyone else, make decisions for you all the time. However, you must show the adults in your life that you can make proper decisions. This takes practise and diligence. It may even take a bit of effort and self-discipline. But it is possible.
2. Many times what you want to do right off the bat isn’t the right thing. Take your time when making a decision. Step back from a decision for a while, say, a day or a week, if you have the time and the luxury to do so. The longer you can spend making the decision, the better.
3. If you have to make a decision right away, try to remove yourself from the immediate situation for a half an hour or an hour and just think about what you should do in a level headed way. This should give you the objectivity needed to make a decision you won’t regret.
4. Don’t be afraid to take some extra time if it is an important or long-term decision. Many of you are just far too quick to make important decisions. Find creative ways to buy extra time before making a decision. You may want to pretend you have to be somewhere important.
5. Try to make ‘right’ decisions. By practising this over time, you could become a much more self-confident decision maker, and your parents may leave you to make decisions for yourself more often. And that is a reward in itself, because there is nothing worse than experiencing the angst of a parent insisting that (s)he always makes decisions on your behalf.
By following these steps, you will become much more able to make effective decisions. And this will make your life so much easier. You won’t have to involve yourself in peer pressure, and who knows, your parents may even be proud of you over time. And how great is that, huh?
Trust Yourself and Nurture Your Dreams
Sep 10th
What do you dream about? When you find yourself in a positive imaginary moment in your mind, what are you thinking? Do you end your daydream with a thought that goes something like, “Well back to reality. I know that was just a fantasy that will never be real for me.”
But what do you really know? How often do you think you “know” something and then find out you didn’t really know what you thought you did?
When people rely on only what they think they know, they call that reality and let it dictate their lives. They limit their own limitless life. You don’t have to rely only on what you know. If we all did that, there would be no cars, telephones, computers, doctors, religion, artists or airplanes.
Picasso was a human being just like you and me. He reached inside of himself and touched his spirit. And he found the most glorious ideas there. Then, miracles of miracles, he incorporated those ideas into his art. And we are the beneficiaries of his daring gift.
You have access to all those wonderful ideas that live inside of you too. And out of all those wonderful ideas are some that fit perfectly with who you are – whether you are two years old, one hundred years old or somewhere in between. When you have an idea, it is your spirit nudging you, saying to you, “Come on! Let’s have some fun and express ourselves.” After all, that’s what we are here to do, isn’t it? Express ourselves?
People too weak to follow their own dreams will always find a way to discourage yours.” ~Anonymous
You are capable of creating amazing things. You are beautiful. You are creative. Your reality is what you allow yourself to believe. You don’t have to believe others when they say, “It can’t be done.” Unfortunately for them, they have limited themselves to what they think they know. But you are unlimited! You can do whatever you believe you can do.
So the next time you have an idea, sit with it for awhile. Meditate on it. Spend 10 minutes three times a day just thinking about your idea. Then see what happens. If it doesn’t feel right to you and fizzles out, let it go. Enjoy yourself until you discover a new idea. If it touches you – tells you that, “Yes, this is something I can run with,” then go ahead and reach for your dream. Feel the energy. Feel the momentum. Let yourself feel it. It feels good! And that is the key to your best life. Feeling good.
Unless we are mentally unbalanced, feeling good results from positive input. Positive ideas, positive actions, positive feelings. You were born positive! Be yourself. Be your positive self. Be the self that knows that anything is possible. Anything! If you can see it in your mind, you can make it real. If others tell you, “No,” just smile and say, “I know better.”
Here’s an affirmation that may help you to trust yourself:
When I have a great idea, I nurture it.”
Here’s to the courage, trust and belief to live your dream, as your spirit glows.
